Congressman appreciated support at redistricting hearing

This letter to the editor originally appeared in The Salem News on June 23, 2011.

To the editor:

During this week's redistricting hearing in Lynn, residents from across our community, small business owners, veterans, nonprofit representatives, labor leaders and lawmakers delivered a strong message of support for keeping the 6th Congressional District intact and growing.

Hundreds of citizens spoke of our contiguous communities of common interests, while also highlighting that more than that, we are truly one community that works together for the betterment of all our residents.

As a compact region with natural boundaries and shared history and culture, our communities have developed strong partnerships and alliances across fields and industries, including education, health care, transportation, veterans services, history and tourism. Our passion and dedication to our communities and our neighbors was clear to all who attended the hearing.

In addition to those dedicated local citizens who participated, Bill Luster, Leslie Gould, Ralph Sevinor, Agnes Ricko, Kathleen Pasquina, Arthur Powell, Jeff Crosby and their staffs must be applauded for their successful work in publicizing and helping to organize this hearing so it was as transparent and participatory as possible.

Further, we must recognize and thank the Joint Redistricting Committee for holding these public hearings across the state and giving the 6th District a chance to showcase our community's unique and impressive qualities. Judging from the state Senate and House panel members' comments, everyone involved should be encouraged and proud of their effort.

In the days and weeks ahead, I join you all in our continued effort to keep the historic and beloved 6th District together and growing.

Tierney Statement on the Passing of Geraldine Ferraro

Salem, MA- Congressman John F. Tierney released the following statement on the passing of Geraldine Ferraro:

"Geraldine Ferraro rightly earned a place in history in 1984, when she was nominated for Vice President. Her legacy will continue to inspire women across the country to reach their highest potential and continue to break barriers, both in politics and in society as a whole.  I was privileged to have Gerry as my guest of honor at a Women for Tierney event a few years ago, and I know that I, along with the attendees, greatly appreciated her perspective and her comments, as she has inspired a new generation of women leaders in this country.

My thoughts remain with the entire Ferraro family during this difficult time."

Year-End Wrap-Up: No Congress Since 1960s Makes As Much Law for Americans as 111th

Dear Friends:

Happy Holidays and all the best in the New Year!

I look forward to serving the next two years - it is an honor to do so and I sincerely appreciate all you did to provide this opportunity. As you know, we have challenges ahead, but I am ready to go to work to overcome them and make sure Congress does its best to meet each and every one of them, most importantly, getting people back to work and growing the economy. While Republicans are expected to make progress difficult on the matters about which we care most, I am determined to work with them and other Democrats to "bridge the gap" to get things done! We must and will give them every opportunity to work with us cooperatively toward that end.

John Thanks Supporters

Dear Friends,

The recent news of Patrice’s and her family’s situation has left us all stunned.  As a husband I feel terrible for Patrice and I will continue to stand by her in these trying times. On behalf of Patrice and our family, I want to thank you for your prayers and your kind words of support. Over the past days, I have done my best to answer all of the questions I can, all the while knowing that I am often being asked to give answers to things about which I knew nothing and have only recently learned. I must admit that it has been difficult.  At times, that has shown through but I hope it has not detracted from my intention to address this matter head-on.
